Civil Guard ratify abuse at Torremolinos animal shelter

Civil Guard report on Parque Animal, the animal shelter in Torremolinos which is at the centre of charges of abuse in a case which broke last year, shows that the centre put down more than 2,000 animals within the space of 20 months. The animal rights organisation El Refugio, which has placed a private accusation in the case, said it equates to 250% more than the maximum number which is permitted. Officers from the Civil Guard nature protection branch, Seprona, have ratified to the court in Torremolinos the report they drew up after investigating the premises. It states that a lower dosage of the euthanasia medicine was used, allegedly to save costs, inflicting a slow and agonising death on the animals which were put down. It took them several minutes to die and some were even stored in the freezer while they were still alive. They also said there was no veterinary supervision of the procedure and that the centre’s director, Carmen Marín, would often administer the medication herself. El Mundo indicates that she is not a qualified vet. Accused with her in the case are Parque Animal’s manager and two vets.
